Workshop Description
Throughout this workshop participants will learn the basics of Second Life, and integrate learning theories in the use of virtual worlds. Participants will be encouraged to create activities that are student-centered and maximize the real potential of virtual worlds. A primary goal of the workshop is to get educators thinking about their classes and how the tools used in Second Life can be personalized for the learning environments that they create. The workshop will explore examples of good teaching in Second Life and move beyond PowerPoint, lecture, and passive learning. Participants will make use of asynchronous discussions, multimedia materials, reading assignments and live, interactive class sessions to collaborate, learn, and expand the range of instructional possibilities that are available to students.
Schedule
December 3rd – December 5th Activities: Learn Moodle, the workshop's learning management system, and Elluminate Live!, the workshop's web conferencing platform. Watch recorded presentations and begin reviewing guest courses.
December 8th – December 12th Activities: Continue reviewing presentations and ancillary materials; participate in discussion forum with workshop facilitators, Bill Moseley, and Pamela Rivers.
A Live Web Conferencing Session is conducted on Friday, December 12th at 2PM(ET) (Online using Elluminate Live!): facilitated by Bill Moseley, and Pamela Rivers. We will begin the session with an open round of comments from the facilitators and then open the forum up for Q&A and/or presentations/show-and-tell from workshop participants. We will finish with summary thoughts from the facilitators. THE SESSIONS WILL BE RECORDED FOR LATERVIEWING AT YOUR CONVENIENCE.
Technology Information
Sloan-C brings you the following technologies to provide an exciting experience during the workshop:
Elluminate™ Live! ™ -- Elluminate’s powerful Live! software will take this workshop to a whole new level of interaction. Well suited for the classroom environment, Live! provides the flexibility our workshop needs, from a speaker delivering to hundreds of workshop participants, to multiple small discussion groups occurring in unison. Live! effectively delivers lecture-type speeches, while also having the ability to facilitate collaboration among many individuals. For more information about Elluminate™, please visit the Elluminate page in the Sloan-C Vendor Corner.
Moodle -- Sloan-C will use an open-source learning management system called Moodle to administer the asynchronous component of the workshop. Sloan-C has found Moodle to provide a flexible and user-friendly set of asynchronous collaboration and learning tools. As with most open-source technologies, the Moodle software is free, making it a very cost-effective software package for any institution or company. We have found though that low-cost does not mean that you have to sacrifice quality. Moodle still provides a robust environment that is dynamic, interactive, and provides cross-platform learner access through a standard web browser.

Presenter Biography:
Bill Moseley, Bakersfield College & Pepperdine University
Bill Moseley/Pirate Shipman (SL) is a Professor of Computer Studies at Bakersfield College in California and an Adjunct Faculty in Pepperdine University's Masters in Educational Technology Program. He is currently finishing his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, with a focus on the ways today's learner relates to technology, information and learning. His interests include alternative learning environments, virtual worlds, and video games in learning. When he isn't teaching he can be found developing software, building Lego robots, and skateboarding with his four kids.
Bill has been participating in virtual worlds and online multiplayer games and environments for almost as long as they have been available. His relationship with Second Life began a few years ago when he ventured into the newly opened world to explore and investigate the technology. More recently he began bringing students into the world to explore the possibilities that a virtual environment can provide. In the last year, his students' projects have been featured in the Christian Science Monitor and the New York Times. In his work, Second Life has become a proving ground for the idea that education should be student-centered, dynamic, and most of all - fun.
Pamela Rivers, Teacher/Technology Coordinator
Pamela Rivers/ Leila Hawthorne (SL) is a 5th grade teacher and technology coordinator at a charter school in Los Angeles. She is beginning work on her EdD in Educational Leadership and working on various articles and a book on student centered learning. This year she has been exploring Second Life with the master's students at Pepperdine and developing ways to make learning more like video games with her 5th grade students.
