A letter from the editors of the Sloan-C View
This issue provides information about ways schools can improve learning and retention while reaching out to underserved and corporate learners:
As ALN gains greater acceptance as an alternative but equivalent form of learning, we need to devote a certain amount of attention to other benefits that may also be obtained, such as cost reduction and improvements in learning outcomes beyond those from traditional classrooms. That is, we need to think beyond “equivalence”. In this regard, there is much to be learned from the excellent work of Carol Twigg and colleagues at the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT), which is recognized for its leadership in areas of cost effectiveness and learning effectiveness. Their focus complements the Sloan Consortium mission and we welcome NCAT to membership.
- In “Improving Quality and Reducing Costs: What’s Next for the National Center for Academic Transformation,” Carol A. Twigg describes the work of the National Center for Academic Transformation.
- In an Opportunities Column, “Scaling Learning Gains and Cost Savings: Course Redesign for States and Systems,” Carol A. Twigg invites readers to join in state- or system-wide course redesign efforts to provide cost-effective, high quality education for all Americans who can benefit.
- NCAT provides its new monograph, “Increasing Success for Underserved Students: Redesigning Introductory Courses.”
- In “Hot off the Blog,” Ray Schroeder provides news about student success.
- The “Sloan National Agenda for Industry-University Online Learning Relationships” initiates collaborations between corporate elearning and academic online learning.
- Welcome to new and updated programs in the Sloan-C Catalog. Why not submit your ALN programs so visitors to the Catalog can see what distinguishes your programs?
- In Sloan-C Member News, the University of Maryland University College announces its presidential search. The Sloan-C View is taking the unusual step of including this announcement because of the importance of UMUC within the online learning community.
- Upcoming online workshops are opportunities to learn and to network with colleagues worldwide. Join Sloan-C for the Marketing Online Programs—Start Date: July 20, 2005. Sign up here to be notified of new events, and for more information, and to register, visit Sloan-C Online Events.
