Educators need effective tools to promote idea sharing, understandings, and collaborative, creative explorations. A wide range of media and tools are being designed and deployed in online education. Workshop Agenda at Glance

Activities begin Wednesday, January 2nd. A live synchronous Question and Answer Online Session will be held on Friday of the second week, January 11th, 2pm-3pm ET. All activity is recorded, even the live events, allowing you to watch the events at a later date if you are unable to attend. All workshop content will remain available until the end of the year.

Workshop Description

What are some of the available media applications that can increase learner motivation and engagement? Educators need effective tools to promote idea sharing, understandings, and collaborative, creative explorations. A wide range of media and tools are being designed and deployed in online education. This workshop seeks to explore effective emerging technologies that improve instruction and learning increasing satisfaction among students and faculty.

Schedule:
January 2nd– January 4th Activities: Learn Moodle, the workshop’s learning management system, and Elluminate Live!, the workshop’s web conferencing platform. Watch recorded presentations and begin reviewing guest courses.
January 7th– January 11th Activities: Continue reviewing presentations and ancillary materials; participate in discussion forum with workshop facilitators, Jeremy Kemp and Bethany Bovard.

A Live Web Conferencing Session is conducted on Friday, January 11th at 2PM(ET) (Online using Elluminate Live!): facilitated by Jeremy Kemp and Bethany Bovard. We will begin the session with an open round of comments from the facilitators and then open the forum up for Q&A and/or presentations/show-and-tell from workshop participants. We will finish with summary thoughts from the facilitators. THE SESSIONS WILL BE RECORDED FOR LATERVIEWING AT YOUR CONVENIENCE.

Moodle: Sloan-C will use an open-source learning management system called Moodle to administer the asynchronous component of the workshop. Sloan-C has found Moodle to provide a flexible and user-friendly set of asynchronous collaboration and learning tools.

As with most open-source technologies, the Moodle software is free, making it a very cost-effective software package for any institution or company. We have found though that low-cost does not mean that you have to sacrifice quality. Moodle still provides a robust environment that is dynamic, interactive, and provides cross-platform learner access through a standard web browser.

Biographies of Presenters/Panelists:

Jeremy Kemp, San Jos State University's School of Library and Information Science

Jeremy W. Kemp is a full-time lecturer and Second Life campus director at San Jos State University's School of Library and Information Science. He started teaching online in 1999. He keeps the official wiki for educators using the Second Life immersive environment www.simteach.com. His instructional technology project connecting Moodle and Second Life has attracted thousands of participants from around the world www.sloodle.com. He is a doctoral student at Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, CA working on educational and social issues in immersive environments. Kemp has master's degrees from Stanford and Northwestern University and has been awarded "Picture of the Day" twice on Wikipedia.com.

Bethany Bovard, New Mexico State University's College of Extended Learning

Bethany Bovard works as an instructional designer in the College of Extended Learning at New Mexico State University and has designed and developed a number of face-to-face and online courses and programs for the university. As adjunct faculty for the College of Education and the College of Extended Learning, she teaches a number of graduate level courses in the areas of distance education administration and online course design, development, and teaching. When not developing courses or teaching, Bethany works with faculty who want to redesign their courses for online delivery and specializes in helping them find just the right tool to support their instructional needs in ways that engage their learners. She is currently working on a PhD in Instructional Design for Online Learning and has an MA in Curriculum & Instruction and a BA in Languages & Linguistics.
