Upgrading the "e" in e-Learning from "Electronic" to "Engaged"

Abstract: If a primary goal of education is to stimulate our students' interest in learning, then we need to find new ways to promote engagement within e-Learning environments. In this presentation, I pair an engagement continuum with an e-Learning continuum to form a model for promoting interactive and engaged teaching and learning. We will examine ways in which the academic community can advance the use of educational technology from merely transferring content to an online environment to transforming and even transcending the educational process.

Biography: Susan E. Metros is Deputy Chief Information Officer and Executive Director for e-Learning at The Ohio State University. She also holds the faculty appointment of Professor of Design Technology in the Department of Visual Communication. As Deputy CIO, Metros is responsible for broadening the campus vision to embrace the full spectrum of e-Learning. She is charged with leading an organization in providing educational technology support and building collaborative initiatives that extend quality educational opportunities to both resident and remote learners.

In her role of educator and designer, she teaches visual communication courses and has designed several award-winning interactive multimedia and Web-based projects. She has served on numerous boards, committees and task forces, and has published and presented widely on visualizing knowledge in new educational environments, learning objects and engagement theory. Most recently, she has played a leading role in Ohio State’s Knowledge Bank Network initiative and is chairing the National Learning Information Infrastructure's international work group on Learning Objects.
